When I was a kid, my dad would buy dry ice, a bunch of sugar, and root beer extract, and we'd brew our own. It went flat pretty quick, but untill it did, it was better than anything else on the market at the time.
I haven't tried it myself, but some day I should.
BTW, for the record, I'm an IBC fan, folowed by A&W on tap. Mug is the best cheap stuff, and Barqs is just cola flavored coke.

Wed, January 18, 2006 - 4:23 PMIt has to be dry ice, which you need for carbonation in home made root beer. The dry ice absorbs the root beer and becomes slushy.
