Greetings, root beer fans... Sprecher (Milwaukee) used to be my favorite but Point (Wisconsin) is actually better. I had it on tap while traveling in Michigan and it was excellent! :-) I also like Capt'n Eli's (Maine), Abita (Louisiana), Saint Arnold (Texas), Red Foil (New Mexico), and The Root Beer Stand (Ohio). All great and worth checking out!

Re: Point Premium Draft Root Beer my favorite
Fri, January 12, 2007 - 10:02 AMThat's how I have found some great ones...on the road. I've had some pretty bad ones too. The worst ones seem to be nothing more than carbonated water with too much sugar. Maybe they use dishwater and pop rocks for flavor. I dunno. :-) -

Fri, January 12, 2007 - 1:40 PMFor bottled stuff at home, I like Virgils and an inconspicuous thing called "Natural Brew." Draft root beers would appear to be an entirely different animal. -

Sun, January 14, 2007 - 12:08 PMyeah i agree with you. virgils is the pinnacle. natural brew is pretty good too. i used to pick up the trader joe's root beer and it was okay.
my whole criteria revolves around the sugar vs. corn syrup factor. -

Sun, January 14, 2007 - 6:01 PMBingo. Corn syrup is a corporation's convenient answer for sweetner. And it blows. -

Ever see an ingredients label like this? Sugar (brown, cane, beet, powdered, maple, granulated, & raw), high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, honey, molasses, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, aspartame, acesulfame-k, natural & artificial flavors & colors, vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, nutmeg, anise, allspice, birch, coriander, juniper, ginger, wintergreen, hops, burdock root, dandelion root, spikenard, pipsissewa, guaiacum, yellow dock, clover, cinnamon, prickly ash bark, quillaia, yucca, carbonated water. -

It's incredibly bad for you. All the bad aspects of sugar, magnified twenty times. Great stuff if you want to become a diabetic with no teeth.
